Welcoming the Holy Spirit into Your Life

If you find yourself scrolling through TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube and wind up watching a video of someone telling their testimony or about a time they heard God's voice chances are the number one comment is "How do you hear God's voice in your life?"  Well, friend, I wish I could give you a simple answer. The truth is I am still learning to hear God's voice in my own life.

But here are three things I have found to be true when it comes to the way God communicates with me:

1. God speaks to you through his word- the Bible.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness
                                                                                           - 2 Timothy 3:16 KJV

2. God speaks to you through the intentional voices of Godly friendship, fellowship, and mentors.

Remember the days of old, Consider the years of many generations: Ask thy father, and he will shew thee; Thy elders, and they will tell thee.
                                                                                    - Deuteronomy 32:7 (KJV)

3. God speaks to you through his Holy Spirit

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
                                                                                        - John 14:26 (KJV)

Today we are going to focus on number 3. Here is the thing about the Holy Spirit, you have to welcome it in. God gave us freewill and the choice to accept him into our hearts. Just as we are not going to insert ourselves anywhere, we don't feel welcome, the Holy Spirit is not going to dwell in us if we do not give it a welcoming environment. As women, we are the homemakers. We spend our time, money, and effort making our homes feel like a welcoming environment for our families, friends, and guests. I don't know about you but if I know that someone is coming over, I am scrubbing baseboards and lighting a candle. Why? Because I want my home to feel clean and inviting. Now, why should I think any differently about my body as it relates to the Holy Spirit?

The Bible says that our body is a temple (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). How do you think Christ would have wanted the temple to feel? Warm and welcoming or mediocre and uninspiring? How do you think God would want us to treat the temple? I can tell you he probably wouldn't want your temple stopping by McDonalds every night and never stopping to take care of itself. I can also tell you that when a temple was built in the Bible there were often very specific instructions that had to be followed to a T. I am glad to tell you that there is an entire book full of instructions on how to take care of and maintain our temple, the Bible. You just have to make the time to really dive in and read it!

Now, back to making the Holy Spirit feel welcome in our life. What are some practical ways we can make the Holy Spirit feel right at home in our life?

1. Form a relationship with God through prayer: Ask God to come into your life. Tell him about your struggles, joys, and blessings. Speak to him often. Pray without ceasing!

2. Study to word- your Bible: As we talked about earlier, we have the roadmap to life at the tip of our fingers if we will just make time to open it and get deep into the word of God.

3. Clean your temple: Sometimes you may have to remove people, influences, or desires from your life in order to strengthen your relationship with God.

4. Live out the word of God: It's not enough just to know God's commandments; we also need to keep them. We need to walk in a way that would be pleasing to God.

5. Learn to be Obedient: Once you start hearing from God, you have to learn to listen. It may not always be comfortable when being obedient. However, we still need to listen and be obedient to God's voice.

As you go through the week think of ways that you can make your life more welcoming to the Holy Spirit. Think of ways that you may be able to implement some new habits to make your heart more hospitable. Share your ideas here!
